EFISIO

EFISIO is an innovative early wildfire detection system, specifically designed to address one of the major environmental threats: forest fires. By combining advanced sensors, IoT technologies, and analytical algorithms, EFISIO can monitor the environment in real time, detect early signs of combustion, and immediately alert the competent authorities.

The system has been developed for applications in contexts such as forests, rural areas, natural parks, and reserves, with a particular focus on territories where the risk of wildfires is especially high.

Key Features

Gas-based detection

EFISIO employs low-cost chemical sensors to detect variations in the concentration of gases released in the very early stages of a fire, such as:

  • Carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Carbon dioxide (CO₂)
  • Methane (CH₄)
  • Suspended particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10)

The analysis of these parameters enables the system to quickly identify ignition points, often before they become visible.

IoT technology and real-time communication

  • Sensors are connected via LoRaWAN, LTE, or XG (5G) networks, ensuring coverage across wide areas even under challenging conditions.
  • Data is transmitted to a central platform that processes information in real time, significantly reducing response times.
  • The system is integrated with an interactive dashboard accessible from both mobile and desktop devices, allowing operators to view geolocated maps, receive alerts, and manage intervention resources.

Integration with existing systems

EFISIO can be seamlessly integrated with:

  • Drones for aerial monitoring, supporting visual verification of high-risk areas.
  • GIS (Geographic Information Systems) for detailed territorial analysis.
  • Emergency communication networks used by local authorities such as Civil Protection and the Forestry Corps.

Management platform

EFISIO is supported by an advanced cloud platform that enables:

  • Continuous monitoring: real-time visualization of data such as temperature, humidity, and gas concentration.
  • Emergency management: instant notifications sent to environmental safety authorities.
  • Reporting and historical analysis: generation of detailed reports useful for preventive planning and post-fire assessment.
  • Scenario simulation: forecasting wildfire spread to optimize resource allocation.

Projects and Testing

EFISIO was successfully tested in November 2024 in collaboration with FORESTAS and the Sardinian Forestry Corps, demonstrating high reliability in detecting ignition points under real operating conditions.
