PLAYA LIBRE
Real-time monitoring of tourist attendance
Playa Libre stands out as an advanced real-time system designed for the continuous monitoring of tourist attendance on free beaches, while also integrating relevant environmental data. The monitoring stations, equipped with sophisticated sensors, collect detailed information which, once accurately processed, is promptly transmitted to the Public Administration through a dedicated platform, and made easily accessible to users via a specialized mobile app.
Mitigating coastal erosion
This advanced tool, known as Playa Libre, plays a key role in mitigating coastal erosion caused by overcrowding. Its main function is to direct tourist flows towards less crowded areas, encouraging the balanced use of coastal spaces and thus contributing to the preservation of natural resources. In 2022, the Metropolitan City of Cagliari began installing more than 10 stations along the coast, from the idyllic Nora beach to the scenic Solanas beach. Today, Playa Libre has become an essential tool for local administrations, offering an immediate and detailed overview of beach attendance.
Smart planning and beach management
The accurate processing of this data provides a solid foundation for targeted planning, enabling intelligent management and effective protection of beaches. However, the benefits of Playa Libre extend beyond administrative use: the free app also serves as a valuable travel companion for conscious tourists. In addition to supporting responsible choices by highlighting less crowded beaches, Playa Libre plays an educational role, raising awareness about the importance of a mindful and sustainable use of coastal areas.
An educational and informative tool for tourists
By providing real-time details on beach occupancy as well as meteorological data—such as wind direction and intensity, temperature, UV index, and rainfall—the app helps guide tourist flows more evenly along the coastline. This targeted approach makes a significant contribution to reducing overcrowding, which is widely recognized as the leading cause of beach erosion.
